In this post, I'm going to talk about the evolution of my list for an upcoming tournament.

The tournament is going to be 1750 on the first day and 2250 on the second day, but I'm only going to discuss the 1750 list in this post.

I wanted to use coteaz for lots of cheap troops so I could load up on toys like paladins.
The paladins complement a core of henchman perfectly because of their durability.
I didn't want my troops to be useless however, so I decided to give them razorbacks or make them a melta bunker. Fortitude coupled with lasplas razorbacks anybody?

So the list ended up looking like this

Inquisitor Coteaz

Elites
5 paladins
Hammer/psycannon
Stave/storm bolter
Hammer/storm bolter
halberd/storm bolter
halberd/psycannon

Troops
3 warrior acolytes
2 melta guns

So I have a full complement of troops hidden in metal boxes with guns and a hard hitting unit thet fulfils anti infantry and counter assault. Coteaz brings his own bag of utility with sanctuary and reserves defence.
Now, we want some hard hitting long range firepower. Lasplas are too unreliable for long range shooting and other than the lascannons I have no guns that can shoot further than 24".
Psyflemen fill a vital roll in this list, bringing reliability and anti-tank. Three of them add redundancy to the list since it has limited options for anti-tank in other FOC slots.
Next issue to address is the paladins foot slogging. Now, paladins have several options for dealing with the anti-tank fire surely coming their way. You can put them in a big metal box that costs 250+ points and is melta fodder, you can add draigo to the squad and walk them or you can add a librarian with the shrouding. In case you couldn't tell, I'm not a fan of landraiders bought to transport paladins. I've seen my raiders get destroyed or immobilised on the first turn too many times to wish to sink many points into them unless I'm running dual raiders which I don't have enough points for in this list.
Draigo is an option, but doesn't add a lot to this list in particular because of the lack of viable grand strategy targets. I could have scoring dreads but I already have six scoring units and I could give rerolls to wound to the paladins but if I got more than one on the roll, the extra options would be wasted.

A librarian is the most promising option, so lets see where we can go.
The shrouding power is a must for the 3+ cover saves and so is the shrouding to help protect my units from assault. Might of titan is nice to have and warp rifts ability to auto-pen can save the day.

This is how the lists looks now.

Now with the possibility of a 3+ cover save, a Stormraven becomes an option. A perpetual 3++ is an incredibly powerful tool and one that suits this list.
A raven adds speed and a reliable melta as well as some much needed anti-infantry with the much overlooked missiles.
For me, the list has one serious weakness and that is dealing with hordes.
It has no real capability to deal with masses of Boyz crossing the table towards it.
So, to counter this, I scrapped the lasplas idea and added psybolt ammunition and assault cannons to the razorbacks.
This one change nullified the lists major weakness whilst still retaining its strengths.

I can shield my razorbacks with the melta rhinos getting a cover save and then shroud to increase the save. For a henchman list, it is fairly durable by virtue of being in vehicles with, more often than not, a 3++.
It may well be a one trick pony, but even without the coversave, dealing with 9 vehicles with fortitude is difficult without psychic defense.

The final list looks like this,
